Arizona Dermatology’s own Dr. Nicholas Flores, MD, attended the 2017 America Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) conference at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. As our Director of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Flores has been instrumental in helping Arizona Dermatology become one of the most active dermatological brachytherapy centers in the country. His experience in advanced procedures is unmatched, making him a sought-after speaker for various national conferences, such as the ASTRO meeting.
Dr. Flores presented data from a published study that focused on the treatment of peri-ocular non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Between 2013 and 2016, Dr. Flores and his fellow researchers treated 86 participants who were diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the eyelid using Xoft Skin eBx System. At the end of the three-year period, the study showed a 99% local control rate after two years post-treatment with no reported cases of side effects—including vision changes, dry eye, retinitis, or injury to the cornea.
The Xoft System was developed by iCAD Inc., an industry leader in advanced cancer treatment. Using safe, effective technology, Xoft Skin eBX delivers targeted radiation directly to the site of the patient’s cancer. The procedure is painless and non-invasive. The results of Dr. Flores’ study and those conducted by other leading radiation oncologists show promising evidence indicating that the effectiveness of Xoft Skin eBX is comparable to leading cancer treatments, including Mohs Surgery.
