The Dermatologist-Approved Guide to Summer Skin

July 26, 2022

Summertime means beaches, barbecues, and baseball, but it also means skin-wrecking salt water, sand, and (if you aren’t careful) sunburn. These can cause serious stress to a healthy complexion, but c’mon – who wants to stay inside?

The warm summer months require unique skin care strategies. All the swimming, cycling, hiking, and other outdoorsy enjoyments are great for our overall health and wellbeing, but these activities can lead to significant ultraviolet (UV) overexposure to the face and body, not to mention skin dehydration and free radical damage. Over time, these environmental stressors can lead to accelerated aging, irregular pigmentation, and even certain cancers.

It can be difficult to determine which skin care solutions will yield consistently great results. However, starting with the methods used by experienced dermatologists is a great first step! Here are tried-and-true techniques our WestDerm dermatologists not only recommend to their patients, but also use to protect their own skin.

Check the Ultraviolet Radiation Index Daily

While standard weather forecasts will help ready you for blazing temperatures, your local weather team won’t reliably alert you to the UV radiation index (UVI). The UVI measures the degree of UV radi- ation on a given day, which is unrelated to the temperature.

Knowing the UV radiation levels in your area can help you apply the optimal level of sun protection for your outdoor activities. J. Ryan Jackson, D.O., recommends checking the UVI daily using an easy-to-access smartphone application. “I appreciate the UV index found on my weather app,” says Dr. Jackson. “This index assists me to make informed decisions about how much time I should spend in the sun and what types of sun protection I should include with my daily activities.”

Wear Sunscreen Religiously

Great summer skin starts with an effective sunblock. Mitchel Goldman M.D., WestDerm Medical Di- rector, is an avid cyclist who takes sun protection very seriously. “The single most important thing is sunscreen, in the summer and the winter,” he says. “We should all be using [sunscreen] every day, whether it’s in our morning moisturizers or foundations.”
While sunscreen is instrumental for minimizing sun damage and age spots, it significantly reduces skin cancer risk. Even if we’re careful to apply sunscreen when we know we will spend the day out- doors, we might not be as vigilant in the car. “We don’t realize we have to wear sunscreen when we’re driving,” Dr. Goldman says. “Your back window and side windows only block 2% of the ultraviolet rays, so the sun comes right in, even with the windows closed.” The left side of the face, the left arm, and the left hand are especially vulnerable.

Wear Clothing with SPF

Although sunscreen must be reapplied periodically throughout the day, a more convenient alterna- tive for the body is sun protective clothing. “In addition to applying sunscreen, I wear sun protective clothing,” Dr. Goldman says.

Sun protective clothing is extremely effective in blocking UV radiation. A garment with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50 can block approximately 98% of harmful rays.

Combat Sun Damage

Skin rejuvenation is critical; boosting cell turnover can help dramatically mitigate superficial sun-re- lated damage. Dr. Jackson is an advocate for using products that facilitate this phenomenon. “To reduce the severity of actinic damage I often recommend topical retinoids to the face three times weekly at night, increasing to nightly as tolerated,” he says. A great starter retinol product is West Derm Retinol Serum 3X, a gentle, antioxidant-rich serum that penetrates deep into the skin without causing irritation.
Summer activities can also cause significant dehydration due to heavy sweating and even exposure to super-drying ocean water. Topical products that enhance environmental protection and boost hy- dration are excellent for minimizing and even reversing mild sun damage. “After exercising I always apply SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic to my facial skin to further decrease ultraviolet damage,” Dr. Goldman says. This vitamin C serum is a free radical-neutralizing formula that shields the skin from oxidative stress.

Get Plenty of Antioxidants

Healthy skin can also be achieved from the inside out. Antioxidants in deep green vegetables (spin- ach, kale, collard greens, and broccoli), beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, and dark chocolate are fan- tastic for ensuring optimal cell health. They combat oxidative stress, boost collagen production, and reduce your risk of developing serious health conditions like heart disease and even cancer.
However, if your lifestyle is extremely active, you might want an antioxidant boost. “I and my cycling teammates take SunIsdin, a natural supplement that provides antioxidants to protect the skin from ultraviolet damage,” says Dr. Goldman. This daily supplement helps protect skin from photoaging (premature aging caused by continual exposure to UV radiation) and enhances elasticity, making skin less susceptible to dynamic wrinkles.

Dr. Jackson is also a big proponent of supplements and encourages his patients to enhance their anti- oxidant intake. “I often recommend Heliocare Advanced with Nicotinamide to my patients,” he says. “Heliocare Advanced with Nicotinamide helps support skin health and maintain the skin’s ability to protect against free radical damage.”

Ways to Protect Yourself Against Skin Cancer 🚫

May 6, 2022
In our effort to encourage you to Check & Protect Your Skin this month in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we recommend the healthy habits below to help ward off illness—and potentially prolong your life. Each habit is simple enough to adopt in a day, so you can set yourself up for healthier skin any time.

1. Avoid peak sun hours: Try to stay inside when the sunlight is strongest, which is usually between about 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you do go outside, seek shade cover.

2. Cover your skin with clothing: Keep your arms and legs covered, if you can manage to do that without overheating! For extra protection, choose clothes with ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF (it’s like an SPF for fabric).

3. Wear a hat and sunglasses: With these two accessories, you can protect your eyes, head, and neck. Be sure the sunglasses filter out both UVA and UVB rays!

4. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30+: If you’ve followed our practice for a while, you’ve come to expect this piece of advice from us! We recommend wearing sunscreen every day, whether the skies are overcast or bright, on any exposed skin to reduce UV damage.

5. Keep sunscreen in a cool place: Sunscreen loses some of its effectiveness when it overheats, so try to avoid keeping it in your car. Make sure that you carry it with you in a pocket or in your bag.

6. Apply an SPF lip product: Slathering sunscreen lotion on your lips probably sounds unpleasant, but that’s no reason to skip over your mouth—the skin there is as important as skin anywhere else! Pick a lip balm or lipstick with an SPF of 30+ for optimal protection. Make sure to swipe some on before leaving the house. To make it easier for you, we’re offering SPF lip balm in our offices all month long!

7. Avoid tanning beds: These beds measurably raise your risk of skin cancer, even with just one use. The idea that a “base tan” keeps skin safe is a harmful myth! If you’re looking for a safer bronzed glow, opt for a sunless tanner.

8. Do not sunbathe: Even after applying sunscreen, it’s not safe to lie around and soak in the sun’s rays. The UV exposure still raises your risk of skin cancer.

9. Do a monthly self-check: Examine yourself, head to toe, for any spots with irregular borders, bleeding spots, or growing spots. If you have questions or concerns about anything you see, make an appointment to see your dermatologist.

10. Don’t rely on sunscreen pills alone: While sunscreen pills can be helpful, they’re best when used alongside SPF creams and lotions.

If you have any questions on the tips above, or you want more personalized advice, just make an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists. We’ll work together to protect your skin and defend your health.

3 Reasons You Need To Protect Your Skin While Self-Isolating!

April 8, 2020
We know that these times have been a huge change for most of us. With many people working from home for the unforeseeable future, we recommend (for the first time ever) spending more time outdoors. But hear us out. Spending time in your front yard, backyard, or patio for fresh air can create a feeling of freedom when you begin to feel uncomfortably confined.
However, these times may make you question your need for sun protection (sorry, but you can’t get out of putting on that SPF with us!). Listed below are three busted myths that explain why you should still be taking care of your skin while self-isolating.
Myth #1: Windows block UV rays.
While you shouldn’t forget to wear your hats and sunscreen when outside, you also should protect your skin with clothing or SPF when you are working near a window or driving in your car. This is because glass is great at blocking UVB rays that cause sunburns, but does not block out UVA rays, or the UV rays that cause skin aging, wrinkles, and pigmentation.
Myth #2: SPF prevents Vitamin D absorption
With most people staying indoors due to current circumstances, we understand the panic of not getting enough Vitamin D. Many people believe that sunscreen and sunblocks will prevent their body from absorbing Vitamin D, but this is untrue. Even when wearing SPF, small amounts of the sun’s rays penetrate the skin and allow for adequate Vitamin D absorption. (So don’t skip that sunscreen!)
Myth #3: Clouds are like nature’s sunscreen.
While clouds shield our skin from intense sun rays, this is not a reason to not wear sunscreen. This is because up to 80% of the sun’s rays pass through clouds according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
So whether you are driving to the store, doing some home workouts in your backyard, or working by your window, we recommend using an SPF 50 sunscreen and/or UPF sun-shielding clothing to protect your gorgeous skin.
If you are struggling with skin related concerns, call your local clinic today so we can answer any questions you may have or schedule a Telehealth appointment for you.
Yours in good health and happiness,

THE MOUNTAINS ARE CALLING 🎿 (*and your sunscreen better be too)

THE MOUNTAINS ARE CALLING 🎿 (*and your sunscreen better be too)

January 28, 2020
Sunscreen is always in season!
When you’re on the slopes in the dead of winter, almost completely covered by protective clothing (like us above), sun protection might not cross your mind—but for your skin’s health and safety, it really should!
For the skiers and snowboarders among us, cold weather can actually mean more time outside, and more time outside equals more sun exposure…4 to 5 percent more skin-damaging UV rays  for every 1,000-foot increase in altitude to be exact. At a 10,000-foot elevation, that gets to be a very risky 40 to 50 percent increase in UV ray exposure.
That’s concerning news for anyone at risk for skin cancer, which really is everyone. Plus, the intensity of the sun’s rays doubles when they’re reflected off the snow …quite the “snowball” effect, huh?

All that said, you can still have fun in the mountains, and do it safely, if you follow these skin health check points below.
No matter how diligently you apply sunscreen, the best defense against sun damage is the care of a dermatologist.  Schedule an appointment and we’ll give you our best insights into protecting your skin.
See you on the slopes!

A Par for the Course, but a Double Bogey for Skin Health ⛳

A Par for the Course, but a Double Bogey for Skin Health ⛳

July 9, 2019
Even if your golf game is strong, your skin health might be hitting every bunker. That’s because golf courses are open spaces, often without much shade cover, and that means a lot of direct sunlight. Courses with water features are even riskier for both your golf game and your skin health. The water features can act like a mirror, reflecting the sun’s rays back at you and intensifying your exposure. In the short term, those sun rays can cause a nasty sunburn, and in the long term, they can cause wrinkles and even skin cancer. So, how can you keep your skin from turning red when you’re on the greens? We rounded up a few tips to help you firm your grip (get it?) on sun safety.
🏌️‍♂️ Seek out shade: If you’re choosing between a golf course with lots of mature, shade-giving trees and one without any, let your skin health be the deciding factor and go for the shadier course. If you can tee off in a shady area or a sunny one, then choose the former. Who knows—maybe swinging the club from a different position will be just what you need to get a hole in one!
🏌️‍♂️ Cover up: The more you can cover your body with tightly woven clothes, the less harmful UV light will reach your skin. If you really want to improve your sun-safety score, find some athletic clothing with a UPF rating. (UPF is just like SPF, but for clothing.) The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a rating of 30 or above.
🏌️‍♂️ Wear a hat and sunglasses: These easy-to-find accessories help to block the harmful UV rays that hit your eyes and face.
🏌️‍♂️ Golf during off-peak hours: Instead of getting in the golf cart when the sun is high, go during the early morning or at dusk. Your risk of sunburn is lower when the sun is lower. As a bonus, it may be cheaper to play in the morning or twilight!
🏌️‍♂️ Pile on sunscreen: We hope you’re wearing sunscreen every day because it’s the easiest and simplest way to lower your cancer risk. When you’re on the golf course, opt for a waterproof formula that will withstand your sweat. This way, sunscreen won’t go in your eyes while the ball is going in the 18th hole.
If you’re headed to the greens this summer, we hope you top your all-time high score and top your skin with sunscreen. For any questions you may have about skin health or sun safety, just make an appointment and we’ll share our insight. Good luck out there!

Summer Sun-Safe Tips ☀️

Summer Sun-Safe Tips ☀️

June 24, 2019
It’s time to dig out your swimsuit and shelve your sweaters: Summer is official here! We hope you have all sorts of fun plans for the season, like visiting the beach, strolling through a state fair, or taking a hike in nature. We have just one piece of advice: Make sure that you’re taking care of your skin as you enjoy the summer sun. Below are a few everyday tips for lowering your risk of sunburn and skin cancer.
👒 Wear a hat: A hat with a brim will keep sunlight from hitting your face directly, helping you to avoid UV damage. The wider the brim, the better!
👕 Cover up when you can: If you can comfortably wear long sleeves or long pants, the fabric will help to keep your skin from burning in the sun.
☂️ Pack a parasol: When you’re walking through an area without much shade cover, bring your own shade! If you want to be extra careful, choose a parasol with a UPF value. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor—like SPF, but for fabric. Parasols (and clothes) with a UPF value are proven to screen out harmful UV rays.
👧 Slather on sunscreen: Sometimes, you can’t avoid the sun hitting your skin. You might not always want to avoid it! Just cover any exposed skin in sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If you need to stock up, you’re in luck: We’re selling some of our favorite, dermatologist-recommended sunscreen brands at 20% off.
However you choose to protect your skin, we hope it helps you enjoy the season. If you have any concerns, or if you want a personalized plan for your skin health, just make an appointment with us. Happy summer!

Get Fresh Air the Sun-Safe Way

Get Fresh Air the Sun-Safe Way

March 13, 2019
Now that the weather’s warming up, more people are leaving their cars in the driveway and biking to work. Cycling has many health benefits, like lower blood pressure and stronger muscles—that’s why many of our clinicians, like Dr. Mitchel Goldman, Dr. Brook Brouha and Dr. Shane Hamman in La Jolla, CA, choose to bike to work. Not only for the physical benefits, Dr. Goldman pedals to better health for the mood-boosting benefits as well. When participating in outdoor sports, like cycling, it’s important you take certain measures to protect yourself from the dangers of the sun.
Though cycling and outdoor sports strengthen the body and mind, the related sun exposure can actually harm you. Over time, the skin can show signs of sun damage, including cancerous growths. Thankfully, cyclists and other athletes can reap the benefits of exercise with minimal risks by taking simple preventative steps.
Choose the right sunscreen: You’ll want a broad-spectrum formula, meaning it offers both UVA and UVB protection. Pick something waterproof, so that you don’t sweat it off or rinse it away while swimming.
“I prefer Eryfotona Actinica from ISDIN,” says Dr. Goldman. “It has an SPF of 50+ and is 100% mineral-based for safe UVA/UVB protection. It stays on for hours, does not sting the eyes, and is not greasy.”
Find sun-protective clothing: Look for UV-resistant clothing from your favorite athletic brands. The higher the UPF (ultraviolet protection factor), the more effective the fabric is. Don’t forget to add a hat and sunglasses, or a visor with your bike helmet!
Pick a shady route: Trees and the shadows cast by tall buildings offer some protection against the sun.
Apply sunscreen before you go: It takes 15 to 30 minutes for sunscreen to absorb into your skin and offer its full benefits, so apply it before leaving your home.
Reapply: Put on more sunscreen every two hours, any time you get out of the water, or after periods of intense perspiration—whichever comes first.
Consider a supplement: “Heliocare Ultra is a vegan dietary supplement with a potent antioxidant formula that helps reduce harmful free radicals,” says Dr. Goldman. “I take one capsule every day when I am outdoors to complement sunscreen for protection from harmful ultraviolet radiation.”
The health benefits of outdoor exercise are clear, and you can get those benefits without harming your skin if you make smart choices.
