Karla Horton MMS PA-C
Meet Karla Horton
My name is Karla Horton. I'm from Rockford, Illinois, originally. I did my undergraduate degree at Stetson University in Deland, Florida. Graduated in 2000 with a Bachelors in Science and then went on to Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, where I got my PA degree and my Master of Medical Science, graduated there in 2003 and started working here in October of 2003.
At Arizona Dermatology I see my own patients. I write my own prescriptions. I diagnose and treat conditions, and I also do simple surgeries. We remove lymphomas, cysts, benign growths, as well as skin cancers on the body as well.
I chose Arizona Dermatology because I felt like there was a good combination of a lot of factors, in particular, the providers that were here were well regarded, well-known in the community. I felt that the staff was very knowledgeable. It felt like a family environment for me. In particular, the variety of patients that we see every day was really appealing to me so not only were we seeing the traditional dermatology conditions but we are also seeing things that were really unusual. So I thought it would be something that would be a very good learning environment for me long-term as well.
Karla Horton earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stetson University in Deland, Florida in 2000. She earned her Master of Medical Science degree and completed her Physician Assistant training at Midwestern University in Glendale Arizona in 2003. She has been practicing at Arizona Dermatology since September of 2003 and is trained in general, surgical, pediatric and cosmetic dermatology. Karla is a founding/board member of the Arizona Dermatology Physician Assistant Society (ADPAS), as well as an active member of the American Association of Physician Assistants (AAPA), Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA), and the Phoenix Dermatological Society (PDS).
Michael Higbee PA-C
Meet Michael Higbee
My name is Mike Higbee, and I'm a Physician Assistant here at Arizona Dermatology. I've been with the practice for six years, since 2008. I went to school at St. John's University in New York City, and I did my medical training at St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers, also in New York City.
So what I do is I diagnose and treat various dermatologic conditions. I do cosmetic dermatology, including Botox. I also do minor surgical procedures, which include removal of cysts and non-melanoma skin cancers.
When I moved here from New York, approximately over six years ago, I was interviewing for several practices. And when I interviewed here at Arizona Dermatology, I had somebody in the office tell me, "This is the best practice in the country." And I thought at that time, "That's a pretty bold statement." But as I went on throughout the interview process and I got to meet the staff, I noticed something. I noticed that nobody ever leaves here. There's a lot of longevity here. There's a very low turnover. Pretty much everybody I'd met had been here for, at least, five years. Some people have been here over 20 years. That's saying something about a practice.
Michael Higbee earned his Bachelor of Science degree from St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y. in 2003. He completed his training as a Physician Assistant at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Centers in N.Y. Mike has been practicing dermatology since January 2006 in New York City before relocating to Arizona in January 2008. Mike is trained in both general cosmetic and surgical dermatology. Mike is an active member of the Society of Dermatologic Physician Assistants (SDPA) as well as the Phoenix Dermatological Society and the Arizona Dermatology Physician Assistant Society (ADPAS). Mike is a local speaker on various dermatological conditions. He has been with Arizona Dermatology since 2008.
